Can we repair tablet computers? If you mean tablets powered by Android™ operating system, the answer is Yes and No.
The Yes; faults occur because of component age, wear & tear, unintentional rough handling, vibration, or an accident — a cracked screen is a good example. And yes of course — we can install and configure all your apps too!
The No; using the cracked or smashed screen scenario as an example, if there’s component underneath that screen that’s been damaged too then no and you may well be looking for a new tablet only because it may not be cost effective to repair.
COMPUTER TABLET SCREEN REPLACEMENT
If your tablet’s glass screen is currently easy to come by then that’s a dooable and a task we can complete.
But know that there is a kerfuffle in ordering a replacement screen for a tablet which is to do with part numbers. Whilst it is easy to glean information such as year, make, model and serial number, this info is not enough when ordering replacement internal components. We actually need the part number that is printed on the part that needs replacing. Getting that info means tablet disassembly and no tablet for you to use in the interim! :(
n.b. — The same part-number thing applies to a replacement keyboard for a laptop too, but getting hold of a replacement laptop keyboard is usually a swift process, so you won't be without your laptop for too long! :)
So, why the kerfuffle exactly? Because during manufacturing, the internal assembly may change slightly and whilst what appears completely identical on the outside of the tablet and sporting the same make and model number, the internal components may have changed a bit. So you can have two tablets that look, feel and work the same but are not the same inside their case.
A recent example comes to mind whereupon a new glass screen was ordered and delivered based upon the tablet’s year, make, model, serial number, configuration, and colour. Yet, when the new replacement screen was examined, the ribbon cable attaching the screen to the tablet’s motherboard was 1 cm too short! The new screen fitted perfectly in every other respect but the ribbon cable was not long enough which meant even more delay in getting the correct screen based uniquely - this time - upon the part number.
If we can use a tablet parts vendor in Europe that either has your item in stock or can get it quickly, then that’s super great. If not, think 5 weeks minimum to get your tablet back.
GENERAL TABLET PROBLEMS
— can be fixed. For example:
A computer tablet bleeping with some sound and no picture is not uncommon.
Tablet charging issues are not uncommon – perhaps a new charging port or battery is required, or both?
Ultimately, the viability of any tablet repair is focused on the availability of the parts to fix it, the technical expertise to get the job done satisfactorily, and the cost.
REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR MOBILE DEVICES (AND THEIR PART NUMBERS)
Whilst we're rattling-on about part numbers, and just to give you an idea about what we’re talking about… This is a picture of a charging port which needed replacing because it had several broken joints that were too small to re-solder and repair accurately. The symptoms were that the mobile device would charge when the plugged-in charging cable was in one position but not when in a slightly altered position still plugged in, almost as if the socket was somehow loose inside. [Editor's note: There must be a more elegant way of describing this but I can't think of one at the moment! ...]
Whilst this charging port (4.2 cm x 1.4 cm) was not expensive, and the overall cost of repair was not prohibitive as in it was worth doing, it was a challenge to find a replacement charging port (n.b. even if we do have some sort of a part number, it often can't be found on the internet). In the end we found a charging port that was similar but not the same and it did have the same shape and connectors. This charging port repair worked out ok in the end. It took longer than usual to search and locate a replacement part, but we did explain our difficulty to the customer at the outset and he was ok with it. These parts issues are not impassable, but when an immediate lack of availability is encountered, it can impede a timely tablet repair.
OUR GENERAL ADVICE TO CUSTOMERS WITH A BROKEN TABLET WHO NEED TO STAY CONNECTED
Own a spare tablet which you can use instead of your main tablet, so that if your main tablet is out of service temporarily, you can stay on-line until it's all sorted.
We know this article may be a lot of yada yada to the uninitiated and I don't expect you to enjoy reading all about part numbers and the folly of computer component repairs, but having read this article, it will prepare you for what you may expect to hear when you bring your mobile tablet device into Riches Informatique as a new customer. Existing customers have heard it all before! :)
p.s. Also, don't forget that your tablet might still be under a guarantee of some sort that will cover the device being repaired, or maybe you've already paid for tablet insurance when and where you bought your tablet, either at the point-of-sale or via your ISP?
